Reliance Jio will soon be foraying into the Direct to Home or DTH business. There were earlier announcements of the service being launched in February 2017 however now it is expected that Reliance Jio DTH will be launched this month or latest by May 2017. The images of the Jio DTH set top box have leaked online and one can expect the announcement to happen anytime soon. The pictures show a set top box with Jio branding. It has ports for HDMI, USB, standard cable connector, audio and video output and an Ethernet port for connecting a broadband modem. It is being said that the Jio set top box will launch along with the Jio GigaFiber net. Jio GigaFiber net is a broadband service that would launch soon and that would provide speed of 1 gbps.
As with the telecom sector, one can expect a disruption in the DTH and cable services sector with the launch of Jio DTH. Some rumours suggest that the pricing for Jio DTH will be 30% lower than that of competitors like Airtel, Dish TV, Tata Sky and Videocon thus ushering in a new pricing model in the DTH services sector. While others confirm that as the DTH service will launch with GigaFiber net, one may be charged only for the broadband and DTH will come as a free service along with it. There are also talks of DTH service launching as a free service for the first 3 months or 6 months. Although, the true picture with respect to Jio DTH pricing will be clear only once it is launched, here are some things that are expected to be true of the service:-
It is expected that Jio DTH would make use of an Android or Apple enabled set top box. With the JioTV app, customers will be able to view the channels that they have subscribed to on their TV, on their Jio Sim operated mobile phones as well. Set top boxes typically cost around 1500 Rupees but the Jio set top box is expected to be priced around 800 Rupees. It will provide a recording feature for minimal or zero costs. The Jio Direct to Home plans would range from standard plan packs to suit a variety of customers, as well as a customized plan option to cater to individual preferences. Although the service hasn’t launched yet, it is expected that customers would be able to order it through the Jio DTH sales team as well as an online portal, once launched.
