Jio launches Jio Fiber Preview in Select Cities

Thu, May 18, 2017 / Lakshmi D Jio launches Jio Fiber Preview in Select Cities

Reliance Jio has launched its Fiber to the Home (FTTH) services in select cities – Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara and Jamnagar. The service launched under the Jio Fiber Preview offer will provide a download speed of 100 mbps at affordable prices. At present, it has been launched only in these 6 cities and will soon be launched in other cities in phases.

Reliance Jio had announced about Jio Fiber services back in March 2017 during their quarter results. The service was undergoing trials at that time. Even now the service has not been announced on the Jio website but has been confirmed on the company’s official Twitter handle @JioCare. Last week, Jio had launched a plan through which customers could exchange their old data card or hotspot router for JioFi 4G router. Under this plan, customers get a choice of two offers:-

  • Data worth Rs. 2010 against device exchanged – In the first offer, customers need to exchange their existing router, dongle or datacard for JioFi 4G router at any of the Reliance Jio Care Stores. In return, they get data worth Rs. 2,010. For getting the JioFi router, customer needs to pay Rs. 1,999 and do a first recharge of Rs. 408. This Rs. 408 can be further broken-up in two components – Rs. 309 for the plan that provides freebies for 84 days and Rs. 99 for Jio Prime membership.
  • Data worth Rs. 1,005 with no exchange – The second plan is available without any device exchange. Customers may just purchase the JioFi router for Rs. 1,999 and make the first mandatory recharge of Rs. 408. They would get 4G data worth Rs. 1,005 free with this offer.

This move by Jio is expected to bring about drastic changes in the pricing model of broadband services just as the Jio plans brought about for mobile data services. The two offers for JioFi router are expected to further expand the Jio customer base substantially in the coming days. The prices of Jio 4G services are quite low and are expected to give tough competition to existing broadband services providers like Airtel, BSNL, Tata and more.

Reliance Jio already has one of the world’s largest greenfield 4G LTE wireless broadband network with 100,000 mobile towers. They are soon expected to add another 100,000 towers and this will only grow their network larger and larger. The Twitter handle of Jio, @JioCare has confirmed that the JioFiber Preview offer is currently being launched in the 6 cities and is in the process of getting rolled out in other cities. These 6 cities have a large base of internet users and the performance of JioFiber services will set the tone for how the service is received by customers all over India. Ultimately, it can prove to be a real game changer as broadband services will get faster and cheaper. Mobile data services have definitely improved a lot and have become real value for money with launch of Jio Prime and JioFiber may revolutionize the broadband services segment in a similar manner in the coming days.
